About Boca Raton
Boca Raton is a coastal city in southern Palm Beach County with two miles of guarded public beach, a distinctive Mediterranean Revival architectural character traceable to Addison Mizner’s 1920s work, and a reputation for being expensive and safe that is largely accurate.
The city divides east and west. East Boca runs from the Intracoastal to the ocean and includes the walkable downtown around Mizner Park. West Boca runs inland, is where most residents live, and includes a great deal of unincorporated Palm Beach County.
The four places to know
Mizner Park, the outdoor pedestrian district that functions as the city centre, with restaurants, the amphitheatre and the iPic cinema. The beaches — Red Reef for snorkelling, Spanish River for shade, South Inlet for boats, South Beach for a simple swim. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, free, with a boardwalk and sea turtle rehabilitation. And Sugar Sand Park, with what is described as the largest free playground in Florida plus a free science centre.
The seasonal rhythm
November through April is the season: dry, warm, crowded, restaurants booked, the events calendar dense, and the Festival of the Arts BOCA running 27 February to 7 March 2026 in its 20th year. May through October is hot and humid with fast afternoon thunderstorms and hurricane season from June to November, and the city is far quieter.
Getting around
Boca is a driving city with a growing exception: Brightline runs a downtown station and Tri-Rail serves Yamato Road, which makes car-free trips along the South Florida coast practical and is measurably lifting property values near the stations. Plan around the east–west crossing, which takes real time in season.
What it costs, briefly
About one and a half times the national average cost of living, median household income around 106,273 dollars. Q1 2026 average closed sale around 908,000 dollars, average home value 575,479 including condominiums, downtown at a 2.1 million dollar median. No state income tax, but budget seriously for insurance and association fees, which are the two costs newcomers underestimate.
Safety, briefly
Overall crime runs about 12.81 percent below the national average with a very low violent crime rate. The real hazards here are environmental rather than criminal: hurricanes, rip currents, heat and lightning, and alligators in any fresh or brackish water.

A first weekend in Boca Raton
Saturday. Start at Gumbo Limbo when the boardwalk opens at 07:00, before the heat, and walk the coastal hammock while it is quiet. Move next door to Red Reef beach as the morning warms, with a snorkel if you have one, and note that parking there is 3 dollars an hour. Eat a picnic in the shade at Spanish River Park rather than driving off. Spend the late afternoon and evening at Mizner Park: park once in a garage, walk the district, and check the amphitheatre schedule before deciding on dinner.
Sunday. Sugar Sand Park in the morning, which is free and holds children for hours, remembering the carousel runs Friday to Sunday only, 10:00 to 14:00. Lunch in west Boca, where the neighbourhood restaurants and the Italian markets are. Then either the beach again or an afternoon at Town Center if the weather has turned.
Adjust for the season. In late February or early March, build the whole weekend around the Festival of the Arts. In December, watch the Holiday Boat Parade from the Intracoastal.
Why ask neighbours rather than search
Guides like these are good at durable things: addresses, hours, prices, what a district is like, how the school district is structured. They are useless at the things that change week to week.
Whether a restaurant is still good after a chef left. Which beach lot is already full this morning. Whether a seasonal market is running yet this year. Whether an outdoor event survived the forecast. What the association at a particular community is actually like to live under. Whether the water is clear or the seaweed has come in.
In a city this seasonal, the gap between the published year and the actual week is wider than almost anywhere. That is what the Boca Raton community feed is for, and it is the one thing a static page cannot give you.
Boca Raton in one paragraph
If you read nothing else: Boca is a clean, safe, expensive coastal city of gated communities and Mediterranean Revival architecture, with two miles of guarded beach, a genuinely walkable centre at Mizner Park, an unusually strong Italian food tradition, and two of the best free family attractions in Florida. It runs on a season, busy and beautiful from November to April and hot, humid and quiet from May to October. The costs that catch people out are insurance and homeowner association fees rather than the mortgage. The hazards that matter are hurricanes and the ocean rather than crime. And the best things here, the nature centre, the playground, the beach at sunset, cost almost nothing once you have arrived.
