★ Razza, 275-277 Grove St is the occasion booking – the only pizzeria ever to receive a three-star New York Times review, from six-time James Beard nominee Dan Richer. Monday to Thursday 5pm-10pm, Friday and Saturday 3pm-10pm, Sunday 3pm-9pm. It is small and in demand, so this is a plan-ahead dinner rather than a spontaneous one – which is arguably the point on a date.

For something more relaxed, Mathews Food & Drink at 351 Grove St does inventive cocktails alongside its food, and Taqueria Downtown at 236 Grove St is open until 11pm and completely without pretension. Our restaurants guide has more.

Dates that are not dinner

The ferry to Liberty Island and Ellis Island from Liberty State Park – the only year-round service in New Jersey, and a genuinely memorable half-day rather than a novelty.

The Sunday farmers market at Riverview-Fisk Park, 10am to 2pm, with live music on the first Sunday of each month, May through November – market, music and the skyline together, for nothing.

Practical notes

Book Razza well ahead – it is the one place where turning up hopefully fails.

Take the PATH and check the late schedule; service thins considerably after midnight, and that is the detail that ends evenings awkwardly.

The waterfront is windy and colder than the streets behind it – lovely in September, brutal in January. Dress for more wind than the temperature suggests.

Sunset is the whole strategy. Time the evening around it and the city does most of the work for you.

Dates by season

Season matters here more than in a milder city, and planning around it is the difference between a good evening and a cold one. From May through October the outdoor half of this page is at its best – long evenings on the promenade, the Sunday market running, sunset late enough to build a whole evening around, and patio seating actually available. Plan the winter version indoors with one short, sharp view stop rather than trying to make a summer evening work in February.

A first-date suggestion

The low-pressure version that works well here: meet for coffee Downtown, walk fifteen minutes of the waterfront promenade for the skyline, and let it become dinner only if you both want it to. It costs almost nothing, it gives you something to look at so silences do not sting, and either of you can end it gracefully after an hour. Save Razza and the ferry for when you already know you like each other.

The Manhattan alternative, and why you might not take it

Worth acknowledging: the PATH means a date in Manhattan is always an option, and plenty of Jersey City couples take it. But the case for staying on this side is stronger than people assume. Restaurants are easier to book, cocktails run several dollars cheaper for a comparable drink, the walk between dinner and a view is short, and you are never facing a late-night journey home across the river. And the one thing Jersey City has that Manhattan structurally cannot is the skyline itself – which, on a clear evening, is a better backdrop than anything available inside it.
