The beaches

Boca has two miles of guarded public beach across four parks, each with a different character: Red Reef Park for snorkelling over a rock reef close to shore (parking 3 dollars an hour), Spanish River Park for shade and picnics, South Inlet Park for boat-watching and fishing, and South Beach Park for a simple swim. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is free and sits behind the dune at Red Reef: a boardwalk through coastal hammock, aquariums of local marine life and a sea turtle rehabilitation programme. Sugar Sand Park

Sugar Sand Park at 300 S Military Trail holds what is described as the largest free playground in Florida, plus the free Children Science Explorium and a carousel running Friday to Sunday 10:00–14:00 at 1 dollar a ride. Town Center at Boca Raton

Town Center at Boca Raton is the large enclosed shopping mall west of downtown and one of the most searched places in the city. It is the conventional shopping destination, in contrast with Mizner Park, which is where you go to spend an evening rather than to shop.

The seasonal rhythm

Boca runs on a season and it governs everything. November through April is dry, warm and busy: the population swells, restaurants need booking, beach parking fills by mid-morning and the events calendar is at its densest. May through October is hot and humid with fast afternoon thunderstorms, and the city is far quieter.

For a visitor, the shoulder months either side of winter are the sweet spot. For a resident, summer is when you actually get your city back.

Getting around

Boca is a driving city, with one real exception: Brightline runs a downtown station and Tri-Rail serves the city at Yamato Road. That puts Mizner Park within walking distance of an intercity train, which matters if you are coming up from Fort Lauderdale or Miami for an evening.

Otherwise, note that the city divides between the coastal side and the western side, and crossing between them takes real time in season. Plan a day on one side rather than bouncing.

A first weekend

Saturday: Gumbo Limbo at opening while it is cool, then Red Reef beach next door with a snorkel. Lunch, then Mizner Park for the afternoon and the evening, checking what is on at the amphitheatre first.

Sunday: Sugar Sand Park in the morning, which is free and absorbs children for hours, then lunch in west Boca where the neighbourhood restaurants and Italian delis are. If it is late February, build the whole trip around the arts festival instead.

On the water

A great deal of what makes Boca distinctive happens on water rather than on land. The Intracoastal Waterway runs the length of the city between the mainland and the barrier island, and boat traffic through the Boca Raton Inlet is a spectacle in itself, which is why South Inlet Park is as much a watching beach as a swimming one.

Fishing is a genuine local pastime rather than a tourist activity here, from the beaches, from the inlet and offshore. Paddleboarding and kayaking on the Intracoastal are calmer than the ocean and are the better introduction for anyone new to South Florida water.

The seasonal point applies here too: summer afternoons bring thunderstorms that arrive fast, and being on open water when one does is genuinely dangerous. Locals go out in the morning.

Day trips

Boca sits in the middle of a dense stretch of South Florida coast, and a good share of what residents do is a short drive away. ⚠️ Worth repeating because visitors get it wrong constantly: Atlantic Avenue, the walkable restaurant and bar strip, is in Delray Beach just north, not in Boca. It is well worth an evening and it is a different city. Fort Lauderdale is south and Palm Beach is north, both reachable in well under an hour outside rush hour, and Brightline makes the longer runs to Miami straightforward without a car.
