Round Rock is unusually strong for families

Not every city earns that sentence, but this one does — and specifically because of three places that would be notable in a city ten times the size.

1. Kalahari — America’s largest indoor water park

Kalahari Resorts Round Rock at 3001 Kalahari Boulevard opened on 12 November 2020 with a 223,000-square-foot indoor water park — America’s largest — holding 20 pools and 30 waterslides, plus an indoor adventure park and an arcade, across a 350-acre resort with 975 rooms.

The reason it matters here rather than up north: Central Texas summers are severe, and a climate-controlled water park runs comfortably in July when outdoor alternatives are genuinely unpleasant. It is expensive, and it is the single biggest family draw in Williamson County. Detail in the Kalahari guide, including the honest position on day passes.

2. Old Settlers Park and Rock’N River

Old Settlers Park at 3300 East Palm Valley Boulevard runs to roughly 650 acres and is free.

For families: playgrounds, a lake, a long connected trail system, disc golf with its own car park, sand volleyball, and 25 baseball and softball diamonds where there is almost always a game to watch.

Inside it, Rock’N River Water Park is the city’s outdoor water park — lazy river, slides, water playground — seasonal, and far cheaper than the resort alternative. It is being expanded with a two-story pavilion and a river carrying two manmade waves.

⚠️ The park is mid-rebuild under a $230 million bond passed in 2023, $151 million of it here. Check what is open before you go.

3. Baseball at Dell Diamond

Dell Diamond at 3400 East Palm Valley Boulevard — opened 2000, capacity 11,631 — is home to the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

The family move is the grass berm beyond the fixed seating: cheap tickets, a blanket, and children who can move around instead of sitting still for three hours. Minor-league baseball is built for exactly this, and it is one of the best-value family evenings in Texas.

The donuts, obviously

Round Rock Donuts at 106 W. Liberty Avenue has been open since 1926. The colour comes from fresh eggs, and there is a Texas-sized donut that fills an entire box on its own — which is, for a child, roughly the most exciting object in Williamson County.

Go early. It sells out, as it has for a hundred years.

The history stop that actually works with children

The Round Rock — the anvil-shaped stone in Brushy Creek near Chisholm Trail Street that gave the city its name.

It works because it is concrete rather than abstract: this is the rock, this is the creek, and 35,000 cattle crossed here in 1867 on the way to Abilene, Kansas, then were driven up the main street. Fifteen minutes, free, and considerably more memorable than a plaque.

A family day, planned

Morning: Round Rock Donuts, early. Then the round rock in Brushy Creek.

Midday: Old Settlers Park — playground, trails, disc golf. Or Rock’N River in season.

Hot summer day instead: Kalahari, indoors, all day.

Evening: a Round Rock Express game on the berm at Dell Diamond, with barbecue from the Salt Lick a few hundred yards away at 3350 East Palm Valley Boulevard.

The heat rule

The one genuine planning constraint. From roughly June to September, outdoor activity between midday and late afternoon is not merely uncomfortable in Central Texas — it is unwise with children.

Structure summer days around early mornings, water, and indoors at midday, and save the trails and the ballpark for the evening. Conversely, winter here is mild, and January weekdays at Old Settlers Park are close to perfect and almost empty.

By age

Under five: the Old Settlers Park playgrounds, the water playground at Rock’N River, and the donuts. Keep it short and near the car.

Five to ten: the slides at Rock’N River or Kalahari, disc golf as a first attempt, berm seats at a ball game, and the round rock in the creek.

Eleven and up: the full Kalahari water park and adventure park, real distance on the Old Settlers trails, and an actual seat at Dell Diamond if they care about the baseball.

Mixed ages: Old Settlers Park absorbs it best — 650 acres with playgrounds, trails, courts and a lake means everyone finds something without splitting up.

What to bring

Water, and more than you think. This is the single most important line on the page from May through September.

Hats and sunscreen. Much of Old Settlers Park is open ground.

A blanket for the Dell Diamond berm.

Swimwear for both water parks — and more of it than seems necessary, because nothing dries.

Cash or a card for the donuts, and the discipline to buy more than you planned.

And one scheduling note worth more than it sounds: check the tournament calendar at Old Settlers Park before a family visit. On a national tournament weekend the park is thrilling if that is why you came and overwhelming if it is not.
