Downtown Redmond station opened to passenger service on 10 May 2025, and the full 2 Line opened on 28 March 2026 — turning a drive-only Eastside downtown into one you can reach from Seattle without a car.

The station sits on the north side of Redmond Town Center, which means the train delivers you into the middle of the commercial district rather than at its edge.

What downtown Redmond actually is

It is a compact, modern downtown — apartments, tech offices, retail and restaurants — anchored by Redmond Town Center, the open-air retail and dining centre that is the most-searched place in the city.

Being honest about the character: this is not a historic main street with a century of texture. Downtown Redmond is largely recent, purposeful and well kept, built around the tech economy that drives the Eastside. What it lacks in patina it makes up for in being genuinely walkable and now genuinely transit-connected — a combination most American suburbs of this size cannot offer.

Eating downtown

The dining is concentrated in and around Redmond Town Center, and the standout is the range. The Eastside’s large South Asian and East Asian populations mean the Indian, Chinese, Japanese and wider Asian food here is markedly better than a suburban downtown would normally support — and it is what people actually search for when they look up Redmond restaurants.

Redmond calls itself the “Bicycle Capital of the Northwest”, and unusually for a civic slogan there is hardware behind it.

The Sammamish River Trail runs through this part of the city and connects Redmond into the wider regional trail network. Marymoor Park, a few minutes away, holds the only velodrome in Washington — a 400-metre track with public programmes. And the city runs an annual bike race and parade.

For a visitor, the practical version is that arriving by train and continuing by bike is a genuinely good way to see Redmond, and the trail network makes it easy.

Arrive by 2 Line at Downtown Redmond station — you step out at Redmond Town Center.

Walk or ride to Marymoor Park — 640 acres with the velodrome, a 40-acre off-leash dog park, a 30-foot climbing wall, and in summer the concert series.

Come back for dinner and a film at the centre, which has a cinema.

Train home. A full Redmond day, no car, which was not possible before May 2025.

Redmond before and after the train

It is worth being explicit about this, because a great deal of published information about Redmond predates May 2025 and quietly assumes you will drive.

For most of its modern history Redmond was a classic Eastside suburb: excellent to live in, prosperous, well served by parks, and effectively unreachable without a car. Visiting from Seattle meant a bridge and Eastside traffic in both directions, which is why so few Seattleites ever came.

The 2 Line removed that. A station in the middle of the commercial district changes who can visit, when they can visit, and whether an evening here is realistic — and it does the same for residents, making a car-light life in Redmond plausible for the first time.

Downtown through the week

Weekdays belong to the tech workforce — lunch is the busiest hour and the cafés fill with meetings.

Weekday evenings are calm and easy, and the best time to eat without a wait.

Weekends are busiest, and the moment when arriving by train genuinely pays off.

Summer is when an open-air downtown makes most sense here, and it coincides with the Marymoor concert season a few minutes away.

Winter is wet, and an open-air centre in a Pacific Northwest January is exactly as pleasant as that sounds — plan indoors, or plan around the forecast.

Living in downtown Redmond

Downtown has been the focus of Redmond’s residential growth, and the apartment stock here is largely recent — built in anticipation of, and then alongside, the light rail. For anyone who wants an Eastside life without a car, this is now the most practical address in the region outside Bellevue.

The trade is the one common to purpose-built downtowns everywhere: it is convenient, well served and comfortable, and it does not have the character of a neighborhood that grew slowly. People who want mature streets and older houses look to Education Hill and the residential areas north instead, accepting a short drive or ride to the station.
