Deep Ellum or “Deep Elem”? Both, and here is why

You will see it spelled both ways, and the second one is not simply a mistake. The name came from how residents pronounced “Elm” — the neighbourhood grew up along Elm Street, and “Deep Elm” said aloud becomes “Deep Ellum.” The spelling Deep Elem survives in old blues recordings and in how a great many people still type it when searching for the place. If you have been looking for “Deep Elem, Dallas,” you are in exactly the right neighbourhood; the modern standard spelling is Deep Ellum, and both refer to the same few blocks east of downtown.

The barbecue

Deep Ellum is the reason Dallas is taken seriously on barbecue, and two of the state’s notable smokehouses sit within a few minutes of each other.

Pecan Lodge at 2702 Main St is the one with the reputation — fatty, fork-tender brisket and crisp burnt ends are what people come for. Hours are Monday 11am–3pm, Tuesday to Thursday 11am–8pm, Friday 11am–9pm, Saturday 11am–10pm and Sunday 11am–9pm; the phone is (214) 748-8900. The short Monday service is the detail that catches people out.

Terry Black’s Barbecue at 3025 Main St arrived in Deep Ellum in 2019 from the Austin family operation, and serves lunch and dinner seven days a week — which makes it the more reliable option if your timing is awkward. The wider family runs locations in Austin, Fort Worth, Lockhart and Waco.

Worth knowing for a serious barbecue day: Cattleack Barbeque at 13628 Gramma Rd holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, but it is in Farmers Branch rather than Dallas proper and opens Wednesday to Friday, 10am to 2pm only. Tatsu: ten seats, one Michelin star

Tatsu Dallas at 3309 Elm St, Suite 120 holds one MICHELIN star and is one of only two starred restaurants in the entire city. It is an edomae sushi counter with just ten seats, run by chef Tatsuya “Tatsu” Sekiguchi and his wife Hiroko, inside the historic Continental Gin Building. It opened in 2022.

Ten seats means exactly what it sounds like: this is a book-well-ahead proposition, not a walk-in. The contrast is the best thing about Deep Ellum — a starred omakase counter and a barbecue queue within a few hundred metres of each other, both taken equally seriously.

Pizza, and the rest of the eating

Serious Pizza at 2807 Elm St is the late-night institution, famous for pies up to 30 inches across — a slice is roughly the size of a dinner plate. It runs Sunday to Wednesday 11am to midnight and Thursday to Saturday until 3am, which tells you exactly what kind of neighbourhood this is after dark.

AllGood Cafe at 2934 Main St is the long-running local room that does breakfast, Texas comfort cooking and live music, and The Free Man at 2626–2630 Commerce St pairs Cajun food with live jazz most nights. Both are the kind of places that make the neighbourhood feel lived-in rather than curated.

Live music and the venues

Music is the reason Deep Ellum exists as a destination. In the 1920s it was one of the most important blues and jazz districts in the American South, and the through-line has never really broken.

Deep Ellum Art Co. at 3200 Commerce St is the anchor — a combined music venue, bar and art space open Monday to Friday 4pm–2am and Saturday and Sunday 1pm–2am, on (214) 697-8086. The Free Man handles the jazz end, and AllGood Cafe runs regular sets. The annual Deep Ellum Block Party fills the streets with more than a hundred local acts.

The other thing to look at is the neighbourhood itself: Deep Ellum is covered in large-scale murals, and simply walking Elm, Main and Commerce between shows is a genuine activity rather than a filler.

Is Deep Ellum safe?

This gets asked a lot, so here is a straight answer. Deep Ellum is a nightlife district, and it behaves like one: busy, loud and heavily populated until very late at weekends, quieter and more ordinary by day. The pattern of problems in any entertainment quarter is concentrated around closing time and around parked cars, not spread evenly through the neighbourhood.

The practical advice is the same as for any city nightlife area and it is genuinely effective: park in a staffed lot or structure rather than an unlit side street, leave nothing visible in the car, stay on the main lit stretches of Elm, Main and Commerce where the foot traffic is, and arrange your ride home before you need it. Getting there and parking

Deep Ellum sits immediately east of downtown Dallas, which makes it one of the easier destinations to reach without driving into the middle of it. DART light rail serves the area, and the neighbourhood is walkable end to end once you arrive — the whole district is a matter of a few blocks along three parallel streets.

If you do drive, use the paid lots rather than circling; street parking on a Friday or Saturday night is scarce and the side streets are where car break-ins happen. Weeknights are dramatically easier than weekends for both parking and tables.

When to go

The neighbourhood has two completely different personalities and it is worth choosing deliberately. Daytime is for the food and the murals: barbecue at opening, coffee, a slow walk along the three main streets, and no difficulty parking. Night is for the music, and from Thursday to Saturday it is genuinely busy until the small hours.

If you want the barbecue without the queue and the murals without the crowds, a weekday late morning is the answer. If you want the neighbourhood at full volume, arrive Friday or Saturday evening and plan to stay late — the kitchens and venues here are built around that, which is why Serious Pizza runs to 3am and the music rooms to 2am.

A perfect day in Deep Ellum

Start early at Pecan Lodge — the queue is part of it, and going at opening rather than 1pm is the single best piece of local advice on this page. Walk it off along Elm, Main and Commerce and look at the murals. Coffee and a sit-down at AllGood Cafe.
