Daytime and low-cost dates

Brookside Gardens at 1800 Glenallan Avenue is free, open sunrise to sunset, and covers 54 acres including a fragrance garden, a Japanese-style garden and two conservatories that stay warm and green in February. It is the best free date in Montgomery County and it works in every season, which almost nothing else does.

The Sligo Creek Trail gives you 10.2 paved, shaded miles, and at weekends sections of the parkway close to cars entirely, so you can walk down the middle of a road under trees.

The farmers market on Veterans Plaza runs Saturday mornings, 9am to 1pm, and a market followed by coffee at Kefa Cafe on Bonifant Street, a fixture since 1996, is a genuinely pleasant low-pressure morning.

In winter, the outdoor ice rink opens on the same plaza, and Garden of Lights at Brookside Gardens is a walk-through display of more than a million lights along a half-mile path. Tickets are required and sell out, so book it rather than plan it.

The practical bit

Take the Red Line. Everything above except Brookside Gardens is within a short walk of the Silver Spring Metro station, and not having a car between the drinks and the show is the entire advantage this town has over the alternatives. If you do drive, use the Montgomery County garages on Colesville Road, Georgia Avenue, Wayne Avenue and Cameron Street, and check the posted evening rate at the entrance.

Saturday morning at the farmers market on Veterans Plaza, coffee at Kefa on Bonifant Street, then drive fifteen minutes north to Brookside Gardens and walk the 54 acres for nothing. If it rains, the conservatories are warm and the whole plan still works, which is not true of most free dates.
