The Round Rock is a real anvil-shaped stone sitting in Brushy Creek near Chisholm Trail Street. It marked a low-water crossing — the place wagons, horses and cattle could get across — and before the first bridge went in after 1890 it was the reason anything was here at all.

A settlement formed beside it in 1851. The post office, originally “Brushy Creek”, was renamed Round Rock in 1854 at the urging of postmaster Thomas C. Oatts. The first cattle drive out of Williamson County left in 1867 — 35,000 head north to Abilene, Kansas — and herds crossed at this rock and were driven up the main street of Old Town. The Chisholm Trail ran through here from 1867 to 1884.

Almost every American city named after a landmark has lost the landmark. Round Rock still has its rock, in the creek, where it always was.
