What Long Beach is, in one paragraph
Long Beach is a mid-sized city of roughly 97 neighbourhoods spread across about fifty square miles at the southern end of Los Angeles County, wrapped around one of the busiest ports in the country. It is not a beach town with a downtown attached — it is a real city with a working economy, a state university, a genuine food scene, and internal variation wider than most newcomers expect. The single most useful thing to understand about it is that citywide averages describe almost nowhere in it.
The things that make Long Beach specific
The canals. Naples Island is a set of small islands cut through with canals, with public footpaths behind the houses and gondolas running since 1982. Nowhere else in Southern California looks like it.
Cambodia Town. Long Beach is home to the largest Cambodian population outside Southeast Asia, concentrated along the Anaheim Street corridor. The Cambodia Town Parade and Culture Festival on Saturday 4 April 2026 is the most distinctive event on the city calendar.
The flat water. The offshore breakwater keeps the surf tiny. Excellent for swimming with children and for paddling, and a genuine disappointment if you moved here to surf.
Second Street. Fifteen or so walkable blocks in Belmont Shore with a restaurant density unusual for a city this size, including Domenico’s — operating since 1954 and one of the first places in California to serve pizza.
The Grand Prix. Three days of street racing through downtown every April, 17 to 19 in 2026, that shuts a meaningful part of the city and has done since the 1970s.
The numbers, briefly
Long Beach runs roughly 52% above the national cost-of-living average, with a median home value near $847,495 and a median rent around $2,287 — figures that spread widely between the coastal districts and the northern and western neighbourhoods. Long Beach Unified School District rates around 7 out of 10 overall, with a wide internal spread that makes school-level research essential. And on safety, the city carries a mediocre citywide grade while roughly 80% of its neighbourhoods rate in the A or B band — which is the clearest illustration available of why a citywide number is the wrong tool.
Getting around Long Beach
The transit position is better than most of Los Angeles County. The Metro A Line runs from downtown Long Beach north into central LA, the city operates its own bus network, and the terrain is flat enough that cycling is genuinely practical rather than aspirational. Long Beach Airport is small, close in, and one of the more pleasant airports in Southern California to actually use, with LAX around half an hour away without traffic and considerably more with it.
That said, most households here still run a car, and several run two. The 710 runs north from the port into central Los Angeles, the 405 crosses the top of the city, and the 605 and 22 pick up the eastern edge. If your work is in Orange County the eastern neighbourhoods commute well; if it is on the Westside, price that commute in hours before you commit to it.
When to come, and what to expect
Late spring and early summer bring the marine layer, which means grey, cool coastal mornings that may or may not burn off by afternoon — while inland Long Beach is sunnier and hotter at the same hour on the same day. Summer is the beach season and also the hardest time to park anywhere near the water. December is the most distinctive month, with the canal-front homes lit on Naples Island and two separate parades.
The rest of it — what opened last month, which block is worth walking, where the wait is two hours on a Saturday — changes faster than any guide can. That part comes from the people who live here.

About Long Beach
Long Beach is a coastal city of nearly half a million people in Los Angeles County, with 97 distinct neighbourhoods, a working port, a large state university and eleven miles of coastline. It holds the largest concentration of Cambodians of any city outside Southeast Asia, the only legally off-leash beach in Los Angeles County, and the only Venetian canal system on the West Coast.
Cost of living runs about 52% above the national average, with a median home price near $847,495 and median rent around $2,287. On safety, the citywide grade sits near C- with an overall crime rate around 4.16% and violent crime at roughly 0.68% — but about 80% of the 97 neighbourhoods rate A or B, which means risk is concentrated rather than spread. The Long Beach Unified School District serves 63,557 students across 82 schools, and fourteen of its high schools made the 2025-2026 U.S. News Best High Schools list.
Getting Around
Long Beach is better served by transit than most of Los Angeles County, with light rail running north from downtown toward Los Angeles, and several districts — Belmont Shore, Retro Row, Alamitos Beach, downtown — are genuinely walkable once you arrive. A car is still useful because the districts are spread out. Parking is the recurring constraint in the coastal neighbourhoods: Belmont Shore meters run $3.00 per hour from 10:00am to 7:00pm and accept cards, with side streets and public lots consistently easier than 2nd Street itself.
